National News about Body Piercing, June 2008

Many debates about the controversial  issues surrounding Body Piercing have been taking place
through the media recently. Many of the daily tabloid newspapers ran articles covering this throughout
the month with many local and national tv and radio stations having phone-ins and discussions,
with many MP's proffessionals, parents and young people giving their views.

"Tattooing and Skin Piercing" debate 11th June 2008

On Wednesday 11th June 2008 Madeleine Moon MP held a parliamentary debate
on the issue of regulation of skin piercing and tattooing in Westminster Hall at 4pm.
The debate raised concerns about the lack of regulation in this increasingly
popular industry. The debate also raised concerns at the lack of any
recognised qualifications for tattoo artists and skin piercers and
the fact that there is no statutory age requirement for body piercing.

Madeleine has very kindly written her own piece for our website.

British Medical Journal
Survey of piercing sites other than earlobe, 12th June 2008

The British Medical Journal have this week, published the results of a survey they have been
carrying out on 10,503 people in England aged 16 and over who have body piercings.
The results make for interesting reading with one in ten adults having some kind of body piercing.
Body percings are more common amongst young women with 46.2% nearly half the women surveyed
having a body piercing. The survey also revealed that almost a third 31% of people between the
ages of 16-24 reported suffering complications with one in seven 15.2% seeking professional help.
The majority of body piercings (80%) were carried out in shops.
Tongue piercings were the most likely to cause problems with 50% resulting in complications.
Alamingly 9% of tongue piercings were carried out by non-specialists and many people
reported that they had performed their own piercing or had got a friend or relative to do it.
The survey found that the most common problem with body piercings were swelling, infection and bleeding.
The survey concluded that  the populatity of this practice could place a substantial burden on health services.
