Following the inquest last week into the death of Daniel Hindle, Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn
is urging caution to young people considering piercing. Daniel, aged 17,
died in December 2003 from septicaemia after having his lip pierced.

Meg said:

Daniel’s death was a tragic event but I hope his legacy will be an awareness around the
dangers of piercing and its potential risks. The coroner is set to raise the issue with the
medical profession as again will I and I am calling on all local authorities to use
the powers they have and do what they can to avoid another tragedy.

I think the verdict of death by mis-adventure was a fair judgement and
my thoughts are with Daniel’s mother, Christina Anderson, at this time.

Meg has supported Christina in her campaign to raise awareness of body piercing
among young people since Daniel's death. Meg managed to change the law
enabling local authorities to regulate body piercing businesses to ensure
they keep to strict hygiene standards and follow appropriate procedures.

Sheffield City Council has a voluntary registration scheme for businesses as a way of regulating
body piercing in the city. For information on Daniel’s case and his mothers campaign visit
