BODY PIERCING AWARENESS WORKSHOP

A big thank you to Christina for her input
into Y7 and Y8 PSHE lessons
in the last few weeks.
Christina's son Daniel,
an ex City School student
died of septicaemia 8 weeks
after having his lip pierced.

Christina has been raising awareness
about the risks of body piercing
and is trying to tighten up the
regulations and qualifications for
those responsible for body piercing.
Her workshop is very honest and informative
and we were pleased the way the students
listened and asked sensible questions.
We look forward to Christina coming to
speak to the KS4 students next year
.

  Raising Awareness!
Dan Aid are currently promoting their campaign
by taking a workshop into local secondary schools,
working with all year groups from yr7s  to yr11s.
The workshop is very informative and interesting
and has been a huge success in helping the
students to understand the potential health risks
and dangers associated with body piercing.

  Dan Aid campaigners have been
warmly welcolmed and supported
by both the teachers and the students
Dan Aid are hopeful that educating the students in the classroom will help to improve their knowledge, understanding and perception of body piercing.

"We are giving young people the facts
so that they may make a more informed choice"
says Christina

Something that Daniel never had

We hope the workshop will raise the profile of Dan Aid which is addressing a very important issue affecting many young people today

"CALLING ALL TEACHERS"

"I have been involved with thousands of hours
of PSHE lessons
in my career - but
Christina Anderson's
session must rank
among the best.
The engagement she gets
from the students
is fantastic and
the range of
emotions encountered
is astonishing.
Christina is a
very special person
who gives a balanced
view of the issues
around Dan's death
and I encourage
you to invite her
into your school."

Christina has spoken to all students at The City School, Sheffield, about the risks involved
in body piercing. These talks have taken place during PSHE lessons, when students
have listened to the story of what happened to Daniel. They have been given the
opportunity  to ask questionsand many interesting discussions have taken place.
Very few students and staff were aware that there are no regulations to control body piercing.

The school has been happy to support Dan Aid by signing the petition, by selling
raffle tickets and by naming our school trophy, for the best school band, after Daniel.
We wish the campaign all the best in the future.

The school has been working closely with Christina who has given workshops to all our year 11 students about Body Piercing and the Dan Aid Campaign.
We put a workshop together over three years ago and are currently taking it into our local secondary schools.
This has already proven to be a huge success with a tremendous amount of support for the workshop from
Head teachers, PSHE teachers, School Health Advisors, School Nurses and the students themselves.
There is still very little information being provided for young people and we are working hard to change that.
Educating them at an early age does seem to be helping them to understand that although this is seen as
something cool and trendy and part of the teenage lifestyle at the moment it is not without risk and some
people will be more at risk than others especially if they are already predisposed to any health conditions.
We do need all the Local Health Authorities across the country to act quickly and use the power given
to them in the 2003 Local Government Act to regulate and license body piercing premises. We are
petitioning at the moment for Mr Brown and his Government to also encourage and urge them to do so.
